Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Annual for MD - 06/09/2025 - 07/31/2025

Annual for MBS - 07/01/2025 - 08/22/2025

All students at California University of Science and Medicine are required to maintain health insurance coverage while enrolled at California University of Science and Medicine. Students are required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) or provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage.

Students enrolled at California University of Science and Medicine that wish to opt-out of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) must submit alternate coverage information through the Academic HealthPlans Waiver System. In order to be approved for a waiver, your alternate health coverage must meet the requirements listed below and be submitted with proof documentation prior to deadlines below:

  • MD Program - 07/31/2025
  • MBS Program - 08/22/2025

Please review these prior to submitting your waiver request.

If students decide not to take the health insurance offered by the University, they may purchase other coverage or provide evidence of existing coverage that meets the following minimum requirements:

  • Major medical coverage of at least $500,000 / policy year
  • Prescription coverage
  • A provider network in the CUSM area for care, specialty, hospital, and diagnostic care. A comprehensive list of nearby hospitals with emergency departments, urgent care centers, mental health facilities, sexual assault services, substance abuse resources, and National Hotline Numbers is accessible to students on Canvas.
  • Mental health coverage
  • US Based health plan
  • Coverage for accidental exposure to environmental and biological hazards
  • Coverage for immunizations
